Background

A local water desalination plant serving families near the Jordanian Hospital area in Tal Al-Hawa, Gaza, became completely non-functional. Before breaking down, the plant provided free potable water to approximately 250 vulnerable families in the area. 

The area was already severely underserved, with limited support from NGOs and private initiatives. Water trucks were not reaching the location regularly, leaving families without a reliable source of clean drinking water. 

The Problem

With the desalination plant offline, families faced serious daily challenges accessing safe drinking water. This increased the risk of dehydration, poor hygiene, and water-related illness.

The professional engineering assessment found that the submersible well pump and power generator were in good working condition, but the main failure was within the desalination unit itself. The unit required urgent maintenance, component overhaul, and replacement of damaged parts. 

Support Required

The restoration required emergency maintenance and replacement parts to bring the desalination plant back into operation.

16,000 ILS / £3,450 / USD $4,350 

Expected Impact

Once restored, the plant would provide immediate access to safe drinking water for approximately 250 families. The project also aimed to make use of existing water infrastructure, making it a more sustainable and cost-effective solution compared to relying only on external water deliveries.

This intervention focused on restoring an existing water desalination plant that had stopped operating. By repairing the damaged desalination unit and replacing essential parts, the project aimed to restore clean drinking water access for approximately 250 vulnerable families near the Jordanian Hospital area in Tal Al-Hawa, Gaza.
