Case Study: Layan’s Story
Help a Young Girl Continue Her Cancer Treatment and Rebuild Hope
Layan is a 13-year-old Palestinian girl from Gaza. Before the war, she was already facing a serious health battle and receiving cancer treatment. But when the war began, her life changed completely.
Her father was killed during the early days of the conflict, leaving her mother widowed and responsible for caring for her children alone. After the loss of her husband, Layan’s mother fled with her children to southern Gaza, where they lived for months in tents under extremely harsh conditions.
During this time, Layan’s cancer treatment was disrupted. She had previously been receiving medical care in Gaza, but as the health system became overwhelmed and services stopped, her treatment could no longer continue properly. Later, a lump appeared on her neck, and doctors arranged a medical referral for her to travel to Egypt.
After a long and difficult wait, Layan and her mother were eventually able to leave Gaza for treatment abroad. Her younger brother remained behind in Gaza with relatives, adding further emotional pain and separation to an already difficult situation.
Since arriving in Egypt, Layan has continued receiving medical care. Her mother is now caring for her as a widow in a rented home, while facing the heavy costs of rent, treatment, transport and basic living expenses.
Despite everything she has endured — illness, displacement, the loss of her father, separation from her brother and the difficulty of living away from home — Layan continues to hold on with courage.
She has been assessed as very high risk because she is an orphan, a cancer patient, displaced from Gaza and dependent on her mother, who has no stable income.
What Layan Needs
